RESPONSIBILITIES

We offer digital solutions for a sustainable agriculture by optimizing crop production and support farmers worldwide through monitoring of soil and crop conditions, assisting with disease and pest recognition and recommend tailored treatments based on in-field conditions.

  • As Senior Software Engineer Backend Java/GIS you are responsible for the Java-based backend development, GIS architecture and operations inside the globally operating digital farming unit of BASF.
  • You ensure efficient and cost-effective handling and processing of large volumes of geospatial data layers, like machinery data, soil and satellite imagery etc.
  • In close collaboration with our remote sensing research team you support the implementation of satellite / drone imagery processing.
  • Together with the project team you translate Digital Farming business needs into IT requirements and concrete technical implementations covering the whole software development lifecycle.
  • Furthermore, you participate in all phases of the product governance and development life cycle, including writing epics, user stories and support the sprint planning in our agile development setup.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor degree in computer sciences, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, GIS or related fields
  • solid experience with Java GeoTools, PostGIS, GeoServer and ideally in STAC.
  • good understanding of geospatial related concepts like raster/vector data handling, geometry simplification, statistical clustering, filters and geometric operations
  • knowledge of handling farm machinery data and environmental data layers like soil, topology etc. would be an advantage
  • expertise in cloud-native geospatial technologies like STAC and the GeoParquet format is a plus
  • excellent communication in English and analytical skills to build as well as maintain good working relationships across the entire organization
