Meet the team behind this journey

The Abuse Protection team’s mission is to identify, monitor and block traffic that harms DeepL’s users, systems, or business.​ The team ensure that both free users and paying customers do not abuse DeepL’s services through excessive or malicious requests, by monitoring and managing usage data, as well as building the necessary interventions when something seems amiss. The team is responsible for DeepL’s shared services for bot protection, rate limiting and usage limitation.
The teams’ tech stack includes
  • C# and ASP.NET Core on Linux in Kubernetes for backend services,
  • Typescript for web clients and Cloudflare workers,
  • Python for scripting and tooling,
  • Kafka,
  • PostgreSQL, Clickhouse,
  • Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo,
  • GitLab, ArgoCD.

Your responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain a scalable, high-throughput back-end traffic and usage monitoring and analysis system
  • Contribute to ensuring the high availability and reliability of DeepL's service even in the event of attacks
  • Integrate automatic blocking of malicious clients into all backend services
  • Incorporate advanced bot detection and fraud prevention technologies

Qualities we look for

  • Several years of professional experience in backend software development
  • Strong proficiency of C# and .NET Core
  • Solid understanding of computational complexity and common data structures
  • Effective and pragmatic: ability to balance 'perfect' and 'good enough' depending on priorities and business impact
  • Strong team player, experienced in working across: leading, contributing and collaborating
  • Curious about learning and understanding technologies, whether programming languages, libraries, tools or systems
  • Degree in Computer Science or Mathematics or equivalent experience
  • Fluent in English

Ideally, you have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Experience in the abuse protection or fraud prevention area, e.g. building sophisticated rate limiting infrastructure or detecting fraudulent subscription checkouts
  • Experience in developing and operating large-scale, high-reliability architectures
  • Experience in cross-team project management
  • High-level understanding of frontend services, even better if you directly worked on them yourself alongside your backend focus
  • Experience with Kafka
  • Experience in statistical data analysis
  • Experience with ETL data pipelines
