Job Description:
The role:
- The product owner is a dedicated to maximizing the value of a product by developing a vision of how the product should function, defining specific product features/ backlog items for the Scrum team to work on.
- The product owner acts with an entrepreneur like mindset, is a visionary, a cross-functional leader and the business user’s advocate.
Responsibilities:
- Contributes on defining the tribe level product vision and also maintains a cohesive vision throughout the process
- Creates the product roadmap based on this vision
- Manages the product backlog and prioritizes the features based on changing requirements
- Supports the Organization’s Agile transformation, driving ceremonials like Sprint Planning and Sprint Review, heavily supporting the Quarterly Business Review sessions, maintaining Feature level Jira discipline
- Manages the stakeholders expectations in terms of product goal and delivery roadmap while protecting the development team from unnecessary outside noise/ pressure
- Collaborates with business users to understand and anticipate their needs and translate them into product feature level requirements. Works directly with internal DB clients to gather the project scope and business requirements
- Oversees all stages of product creation, including design, development and testing
- Monitors and evaluates product progress at each stage of the process
- From risk management perspective, is maintaining the RAID log with full transparency towards stakeholders, actively anticipating and mitigating any issues threatening the delivery
- Delivers updates and status reports on team and also senior stakeholder level
Skills:
- Analytical - the ability to collect and analyze information, solve complex problems rationally, and make decisions on time for enhanced productivity
- Communication - creating and communicating product backlog items and communicating product goals with cross-functional teams. As this happens daily, this is what the PO does, the PO must be exceptionally good in communication, thinking of:
- How to narrate the message using a language that the receiver can understand easily
- What channel to use (oral, email, chat, video)
- How to craft the message to ensure clarity
- The feedback from the receiver and then re-craft the message again to address feedback and issues
- How to minimize noise during communication for effective message delivery.
- Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and fast changing environments
- Adapt the speech to different organizational level with both technical and non-technical people
- Ability to influence senior client business and IT executives on transforming towards agile Ability to move between strategic discussions with senior client leaders to tackle on the ground agile coaching with teams
- Technical - know the ins and outs of development, design, agile framework, software development, scrum approach, and IT infrastructure
- Decision making - this is a decision making role, being both responsible and accountable for the product, is going to make multiple decisions daily from what items to include in the product backlog, how to prioritize them, and how to best communicate the same to the scrum team. A product owner must have exceptional decision-making and problem-solving skills and that too should be based on analytical and critical thinking. A PO must be logical and reasoned and his/her decisions must not be based on assumptions and/or judgment
- Project management - A product owner isn’t a project manager but they must have project management skills, in all project stages
- Collaboration – a PO will not work alone but as part of the software development team. Emotional intelligence is the key skill that a PO must possess to work effectively in the team
- Time management – it would be a time consuming activity so would expect the PO to be able to prioritize his/ her time accordingly. Ability to work under pressure,
- Creativity – links up to being solution oriented, most difficult situations can be resolved with creativity
- Storytelling – to be adapted to the interlocutor
