The Steelwork Field Engineer at Dematic plays a key role in the EMEA Steelwork Operations Team, providing expert technical guidance across the design, implementation, and execution of steelwork scopes on complex material handling projects. Acting as the on-site authority for steelwork standards, the role leads and coordinates site teams and subcontractors to ensure safe, high-quality, and right‑first‑time installation in full alignment with Dematic’s project objectives and EHS requirements.

Tasks and Qualifications:

Main Job Objectives
  • Provide safety education and coaching to subcontractor teams, promoting hazard awareness, behavioural safety observations, and a strong safety-first culture.
  • Act as a positive safety role model, ensuring right-first-time steelwork installation and alignment with a unified site safety culture.
  • Monitor adherence to RAMS, offering effective supervision in high-risk activities and ensuring compliance on site.
  • Produce accurate, timely, and evidence-based safety and progress reports using cloud-based tools (e.g. Gensuite).
  • Coordinate and supervise all on-site steelwork activities, driving safety and quality compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Carry out and oversee regular quality checks, recording quality incidents and trends using QMS reporting systems.
  • Collaborate with the Site Manager to contribute to the Site Installation Plan for steelwork and manage delays, defects, and remedial actions.
  • Ensure successful, defect-free handover of steelwork to mechanical installation teams and support through to customer handover.
  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for steelwork-related safety and technical queries within assigned areas or PLC zones.
  • Work cross-functionally with Engineering, Procurement, and Project Management teams to resolve issues and improve delivery.
  • Drive productivity improvements and optimisation initiatives to enhance production and assembly rates on site.
  • Mentor and support team members, sharing specialist steelwork knowledge and supporting succession planning.
  • Identify energy, material, and resource waste on site and implement improvements to reduce and minimise waste.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant industry experience, including field engineering at a similar level and expert knowledge of steel structures for material handling systems.
  • Strong ability to carry out structural analysis, determine connection details, perform basic sizing and cost calculations, and technically evaluate RFQs and supplier information.
  • Proven capability to contribute to cost-effective technical solutions, collaborate on constructive design, and support the creation of 2D/3D steelwork drawings.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, including acting as an EMEA technical point of contact and managing, auditing, and coordinating suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Solid knowledge of statutory regulations and structural standards, proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD and Tekla, with safety qualifications (e.g. NEBOSH/IOSH, First Aid) considered desirable.
