JOB DESCRIPTION:

Position Summary:

Leads the Bendix air compressor engineering department by providing technical direction and ensuring engineering capability and capacity to sustain and grow the product portfolio and advanced technologies. Responsible for providing technical guidance in support of product development activities, providing technical resources to the product teams, developing technical skills and competencies, providing technical support to external customers, and broadly driving sound engineering decisions and decision processes.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides technical influence and guidance of air compressor development initiatives for internal combustion engine applications and electric vehicle applications, including perspective of the complete air supply system.
  • Provides knowledge base relative to standards, regulations, best practices, internal processes and customer requirements to support product development.
  • Assesses cost/benefit trade-off of technical solutions and leads decision making process.
  • Develops and manages intellectual property both personally and leading the team. Looks for opportunities to utilize advanced development and/or strategic planning for potential commercialization.
  • Coordinates and aligns with product and marketing teams to identify benchmark opportunities for competitive products, contributing to global benchmark database.
  • Provides the product organization with capable, skilled, and cross-trained (T Shaped) engineering resources that can function successfully on self-guided Agile/Scrum teams.
  • Promotes development of air compressor subject matter expertise and unique/specific engineering skill sets, while mentoring key talent.
  • Identifies, benchmarks, and documents best practices for improved design, test, and product engineering throughput and accuracy.
  • Supports STRAP/MOP activities for multi-year resource planning of R&D headcount and expense/capital budgets, aligned with strategic objectives of compressor business.
  • Responsible for the execution of approved policy decisions and must demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving unprecedented engineering problems, supporting program objectives and requirements, and developing standards for diverse engineering activities.
  • Provides leadership, project supervision, coordination and guidance to the engineering department according to established Bendix Goal Tree priorities and is committed to developing a strong group of technical engineers who have the skill-set necessary to develop innovative technologies.
  • Utilizes resources both internal to Bendix and external to ensure project priorities are accomplished with flexible capacity.
  • Proactively anticipates, identifies, and mitigates potential difficulties to ensure technical requirements are achieved.
  • Drives continuous improvement and cost savings of compressor products & processes, using Six Sigma tools & lean methodologies.
  • Communicates with customers and suppliers to ensure that products meet required specifications.
  • Accountable for accuracy & timeliness of engineer deliverables including drawings/specs, technical literature, design reviews, DFMEA, DVP&R, APSG, reliability & robustness plans, technical release, and application support.
  • Responsible for setting, maintaining, tracking, and meeting relevant department KPIs.
  • Represents compressor engineering within the cross-functional organization and cultivates relationships & alignment with global engineering counterparts.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledgeable in engineering processes throughout product life cycle (concept, development, product support, end of life).
  • Industry standards including IATF16949, ISO9001, AIAG, SAE.
  • Problem solving (e.g. Six Sigma), root cause investigation (e.g. Fishbone, Fault Tree), corrective action (e.g. 8D), design of experiments (DOE).
  • Design failure modes & effects analysis (DFMEA), functional hazard analysis (FHA).
  • Product lifecycle management (PLM), computer aided design (CAD), geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Manufacturing processes for metal casting, forging, precision machining, stamping, material treatment, molding, wiring, circuits, assembly.
  • Specification of components including sensors, electrical connectors, wire harnesses, electric motors/drives, circuit boards bearings, seals, gaskets, springs, fasteners, fittings, lubricants.
  • Finite element analysis (FEA) for stress and heat transfer, material fatigue analysis, dynamic simulation (e.g. Matlab), and calculations of bolted joints, bearings, springs, seals/gaskets.
  • Integration of mechatronic subsystems onto vehicle platforms, including hardware/software, power supply, CAN data bus, diagnostics, cybersecurity.
  • Value analysis / value engineering (VAVE), remanufacturing processes.
  • Broad knowledge of principles and theories of the engineering profession.
  • Recognition and working expertise of how the compressor fits into and impacts the engine and air brake subsystems of the vehicle

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in engineering roles with progressively responsible positions.
  • Prior experience of directly managing and/or supervising engineering staff.
  • Experience in mechanical and/or mechatronic product development required.
  • Global development experience preferred (via distributed development responsibility).
  • Proven track record of success in managing engineering projects, preferably vehicle technology development.
  • Experience in related industry, e.g. automotive, commercial vehicle, engine, driveline, industrial pumps/compressors.
  • Proficiency with structured development processes including design, analysis, testing, problem solving.
  • Proven communication skills & emotional intelligence.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to become subject matter expert of air compressor technology.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent professional experience preferred
  • Additional certifications a plus, such as Agile/Scrum, Six Sigma, GDTP, PE
